The endless ocean and ferocious storms forever doom the Technicians to live a delicate existence somewhere between the tortuous winds above and the crushing depths below. They toil endlessly to shore up the perimeter of the wave-torn ancient structure they inhabit. For countless generations no one has seen anything more than brief glimpses of the chaotic 'topside'. Holding on to some parts of ancient technologies, the basic knowledge of where they came from and the nature of their world have long been forgotten. When their great floating city threatens to break apart, the Technician race must search for a place to colonize. Since no one has ever heard of 'anywhere else', where could they possibly go? As if the breakup of the city wasn't bad enough, the experts detect a mysterious object in the deep more massive than a hundred cities -- and it's passing beneath them. Twin brothers Ix and Mox set out on a journey to rediscover what their ancestors knew, a move that will either save the Technicians or destroy everything they've ever known.

The Continent, a city floating under a raging sea surface, threatened by periodic earthquakes which accompany a "thrash tide", built by the mysterious "Those Who Came Before", is the setting for “Waterball”, the first part of the science fiction trilogy “One Eternal Round”. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of The Continent, their city that has floated for generations is slowly breaking apart, and they must make drastic changes, and soon.

As time passes, they encounter the "Wardens", a people who spend most of their time in a virtual world, avoiding going outdoors "in the Flesh" where their very existence would be threatened by the warlike "Inmates". How these groups come together and what they learn about their common origin takes up the remainder of Book 1 and sets the scene for Book 2.

Author A. Scott Howe is an engineer at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory who has worked extensively in robotics and designing and building long-duration human habitats for space missions. From his engineering background, he brings a realism to his writing. Howe's writing style is engaging, and keeps the reader guessing about the direction the plot is going. There are frequent plot twists and hints to what is coming, but the ending is unexpected.

Waterball A Scott Howe PhD 9780985076504 Books Reviews

This is a great read, especially if you love very realistic hard SciFi. It's hard to find this type of story today, and it reminds me of the classic Asimov and Clarke books. I enjoyed the characters and the world that the author has created. This is the first book in a trilogy, but it works well as a complete and satisfying story on its own.
